LESSON 5

MONEY WAKE-UP CALL

Rappers and rock stars have sold us on the idea that fast money equals happiness…big cars, glitz, glamour, champagne and massive piles of diamonds. But they’re not the only ones that successfully pull the wool over our eyes—shops and casinos manage to fool millions every day, the media is a big old liar and you, yes you, are possibly the biggest supporter of myths about money! Don’t believe me? Well, it’s true!

Reminders

Money is a serious topic, but that we all have the capacity to responsibly manage our finances.

Task

Identify the many ways in which you waste money. List your unnecessary expenses and commit to changing your ways.

Examples

Don’t shop for food when you’re hungry. You’ll buy stuff you simply do not need.

Don’t always pay by card because you will lose track of the balance you have available in your bank account.

Don’t be lazy. Stop buying sliced and peeled vegetables and fruit.

Do your simple car repairs at home. If you really don’t have a clue, YouTube it!

Stop buying bottled water—tap water in SA is of a high enough quality to trust.
